A CRISIS THREATENED. DELIBERATIONS IN THE HOUSE. (British Official Wireless.)
RUGBY, May 27
In the House of Commons, the Minister of Mines, Mr Foot, stated that the recent conversations between the miners and the mine-owners have net produced an agreement upon the means of dealing with the problem arising in July when the Coal Mines Act, 1921 expires. He said that therefore the initntive has developed on the Government, which will at once introduce « Bill to deal with the situation. It is understood that a measure will provide for the continuation of the seven and a-lialf hours a day in the mines.
Right Hon. W. C. Runciman (President of the Boal-d of Trade) on arriving late from luncheon, at Parlinnient, explained that ho had been detained with the Miners’ Federation Executive in an attempt to avert a coal crisis, which was threatened, if no arrangements were made before July 3.
The Miners’ Federation later expressed pn/cund surprise at the new Bill, and it has summoned a National Conference for Mav 31.
