FIGURES FOR APRIL

A statement by the General Manager of Railways is a® follows :—A necessary adjustment of the usual railway four weekly accounting system to the term of the financial year makes the first accounting-period since 31st. March, 1932, on© of 30 days (or 26 working, days) a® compared with 25 days (orMW year. Comparing’'these periods an improvement of £BOOO in the net revenue is ishown to 30th. April, despite the fact that there was no Easter traffic in April this year, whereas last year it was included in the April period. The total working expenses for the 30 day period of the current year were only £153 more than for the 25 day period last year, 'leaving £BOOO in round figures as tile amount of improvement in the net revenue to 30th. April. The actual figures are—Revenue increased hy £BOB4 (from £514,679 to £522,763), working expenses increased by £153 (from £419,934 to £420,087). The volume of traffic carried hy railways is still under the influence of depressed trade conditions, and the decreased expenditure is at present the principal factor in any nonrevenue improvement that can he effected.
