CHRISTCHURCH, -May 18
“Calls for relief are growing every week, and if things get much worse •there will be nothing for it but to -start the Pound Scheme,” Mr J. YV. 'Woodbury, manager of the Central Relief Depot, told a -reporter. Last week nearly 1,900 cases were helped, and this week Mr Woodbury expects to exceed the 2,000 mark.
280 RUSH FOR- A JOB
CHRISTCHURCH, May 18
The Art Gallery Committee reported to the City Council last evening that 280 applications for the position of caretaker at the new art gallery had been received. After interviewing the applicants, it recommended the appointment of Mr and Mrs H. Cowell. The Council approved of the recommendation.
