GAMBLING AND BETTING DEBTS

CHRISTCHURCH, May 17.

A postal employee admitted defalcations amounting to £lB3 5s l|d in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. He was Edward Joseph Robb,, aged 39 years, a resident of Oxley Street, who was committed to the -Supreme Court for sentence, bail being allowed in the sum of £IOO and -one surety of £IOO. The thefts took place between February 15 and . May 9. .Gambling and betting on races were the reasons advanced by Robb for his lapse. He sain that he -was a single man . and was supporting an aged mother.

Detective E. F. O’Brien said that be interviewed Robb, who made a statement, in which he said he had been in the service of the department for nineteen years. He was receiving £4 15s a week.
