LONDON, Alay 3.
“Men and women both sprang from the apes, but women sprang the fatliest.” Air Justice- • McCardie, the bachelor judge, made this quotation from a, schoolgirl’s essay, when summing up a debate on the question whether man or woman obtains 4 the best out of life.
Miss Elinor Glyn, riqvelist, initiated the debate. iShe expressed tHe_ opinion .that men’s chances far ' exceeded those of ■ women—not on their > 'merits, but because men always had been the “lord of creation.”
Mr Gilbert Frankau, another popular writer, in reply, said there had been no hope for men since Adam’s rib became Eve.
Air justice AlcCardie said life’s whole secret could be found in three things. “The first,” he said, “is that happiness which you and I have been awaiting all these years and are still awaiting; the second is the sense of achievement; and the third the sense of fulfilment.. “I think men have far greater opportunities than women, 'especially in heroism on the battlefield, which is yet unknown to women.
“Nevertheless,” Mr Just-ice McCardie added, after quoting ..“Romeo and' Juliet”. and! Herrick-a poems, “there are- moments when if I could be a women, and have such'works addressed to me, I doubt whether I would remain a man.”
