A REPLY TO VERB SAP.
(To the Editor). Sir.—Allow me through the ccf minis of vour valuable paper, to make, as lav: as T am able; a reply ‘to your correspondent Verb Sap, on County Election,in your issue of the 26th 'nst. In the first place 1 would like to ask him. does it necessarily follow that the Harihari ratepayers find fault with the Westland Oourfiy Council as a whole, just because we have the audacity to ope’i’.v declare that the time has arrived when the Southern Riding should
support its own representatives. Oh, no! -Mr Verb Sap, wo quite realize that we pay a lower rave to tli W.C.C. than most other districts am are quite ready to give credit, when credit is due. Your correspondent, M Editor, talks of “British Fair Play' and "Courage of their Convictions.' It is ik'- once quite apparent to tlw casual reader that he has neither ol these qualities. If lie has why not have come out in the open instead, o* hiding behind a “Xom de Plume." I think I can supply the reason \vh\ he didn't, if lie had the courage to clc so. 1 take the liberty of saying “ha: instead of being a letter “To the Editor,” it would have amounted to nothing more or less than a straight out "Election Speech.” No, Mr Ed'toi Peterson's road question is not th- onf reason why we have come to the corc.usion v v -should i ipport our own members, although it would be quit; enough especially so, when everyone (Verb Sap especially) remembers that a petition signed by some 40 or mort ratepayers, and abiv presented before th. W.C.C.. praying that the road be lcep on the legalised route, was rejected be
a majority of one, tlm two poor 111: fortunate monibcrs, who Verb Sap nov
pie.ids for’;'- voting against the wishe of the ratepayers, while two othe,
fanner representatives of the othe ridings suppmied them. I ask you, At Kdityir, were these town members. a they are called, put there to carry on the wishes of the ratepayers, or to vot against them in spite of any g-ooil on brought forward?
We came to khe> conclusion that w should support- men, who being farmer could naturally take the farmers' poitt of view and not go just which wa; suited them best. Your coi'i'esponden speaks of the saving in travelling e-\ ponses -if we- ro-ek-tped the town mem hers. Now for the last twelve months meetings have only been held ever alternate month and the same arrange niont is made for the next year. How ever, 1 am quite certain that no south ern ratepayer will begrudge *!ie travel ling expenses of their members. espe< i ally when they know they will at least get a spin for their money.
This brings me now to the time who' wo will', want the Council Chamber and Treasurer situated .in Har'liud. Quite a timely suggestion, which can be slightly improved oil. especially so when it is a well known fact that tic Westland County 'is the longest i> New Zealand. It may he wed uoi", i going into. The Sout’ern Hiding couh nicely make. a. county of Us own w.'t! headquarters n|: Wataroa. This wouh eliminate quite a dot of travelling expenses and eater for the Far South much better. We are always nadi of the wonderful resources of Sent' Westland. Many thunks for the tip Mr Verb Sap. In conclusion, Mr Edit"!'. I Impc :1c Southern ratepayers will treat Verb 'Sap's epistle to the fate H deserve:, am' lake it as nothing more or loss than “Election Propaganda,” and on electin' day show tlliC they have at least taker notice, hoping that sonic more aider pen than mine will also reply. Thanking you fnr your ve.'ualde '•■pace. 1 am, etc., ONE OF THE IHsu o”’ v '"" El’ F''W. llarilmri. April 28lh. 1932.
