A further strengthening of the belief of Japanese intentions to assume control of the Chinese eastern railway is a report from Harbin which announces Manchukos intention to re-name the railway hjorth Manchurian railway. This announcement, following closely upon Japanese activities the Chinese eastern railway’ is believed to be indicative of Japaffc'se determination to control all railways in Manchuria, linking up the south (.Manchurian railway. The Soviet Government who are joint operators of the Chinese eastern railway have made no statement regarding the Japanese latest move. Meantime, severe fighting is reported in Chientao neighbourhood between Japanese expeditionary forces and Chinese, result* ing in heavy casualties among the -latter. r . 4

BRITISH MOTOR-CAR INDUSTRY

LONDON, April 8.

The “Daily Telegraph’s”, motoring correspondent says that the British motoring industry has decided to partake in the industrial exhibition at Copenhagen in September, thus opening a new chapter in the struggle for the world’s motor-car markets. The United States is already believed to be out of the European markets permanently, and will soon be out of the markets of the whole Empire. The future of- the motor-car trade in Europe rests between Britain and Germany. Within the past year, the United States lost her former artificial export business, in which the high profits of the home trade enabled her to export at prices 15 per cent, below cost. America produced only two and a-hnlf million motor-cars in 1931, compared with five and a-half million in 1929.

EXPORTS DISPLAY

LONDON, April 8.

Mr Stanley Baldwin opened a display of new season’s exports. There were two hundred thousand cases this year and it is anticipated there will be a million and a half cases next season.

Australian Dairy Produce Export Board is sending H. W. Osborne, a member of . that board to tbe Ottawa. Conference, in a consultative capacity. He is. authorised to confer with representatives of New Zealand and other Dominions in regard to the- preparation of a common policy on dairying problems for the Ottawa Conference.

MELBOURNE, April 8,

A crowded electric train collided with the rear of another train between Windsor and Balaclava during the peak loading to-day. Both trains were severely damaged. Passengers were thrown out, and suffered shock, but nobody was seriously injured.
