COUNTY COUNCIL
TO CEASE WORK NON PAYMENT OF RATES. (By Telegraph.—Per Press Association) GISBORNE, April 6. The Matakaoa County Council having collected only. 31 pen cent of its rates, has' decided temporarily to cease operations, and the position has been referred to the- Minister of Internal Affairs. The County staff have atl been discharged. At a meeting of the Council, a resolution was passed expressing appreciation of Mr M(.‘Naught's services at County Clerk. Replying, Mr McNaught said that lie would still remain in office without remuneration, and attend to matters which might crop up.
When Matakaoa wais severed rrom Waiapu in 1920, it took over a liability of £15,000, and later raised a £30,000 loan in London for roading, and the construction of Hicks Bay harbour works. In addition £5,000 was raised' through State advances and the Public Trust. Then total revenue received this year is only £5,000, barely sufficient to pay interest. The difficulty, primarily, is due to tlie non-payment of rate* by iho natives, who are responsible for onethird of the total rates, and, who, since the inception of the County; have paid only 50 per cent. This year only £SO has been received from the natives.
