KING AT SERVICE
MAUNDY THURSDAY
AT WESTMINSTER ABBEY.

Their, Majesties the King and Queen will to-morrow (Thursday) attend the Maundy Thursday service at Westminster Abbey. On this occasion in Westminster Abbey, when in accordance with the old custom. Maundy pennies will be distributed. This will he the first occasion that the reigning Sovereign has attended tHis service for a great number of vears.
The Maundy Office originally consisted of the washing of the feet of twelve poor old men by the King to commemorate the wash in nr of the Apostles’ feet bv Christ. The last English King who carried out this dntv was King .Tames TT. Since the day of King James TT. the gifts of Maundy money have been distributed on behalf of the King to aged and infirm poor. As many men and ns many women as there are years in the King’s age (67 this year) Jwill«recei-ve,diEa.undy»money. Each will be given 67 pence.
