RELIEF WORK

FOR SINCLE UNEMPLOYED -MODIFICATION OF 4A SCHEME. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 24. The Unemployed Board has set 4 itself out to li;.d employment on the land for every unemployed single mail in tile country before the waiter, and with this end m view is making a i determined attempt to bring belore 4 farmers advantages of the No 4a srneme. Ibe n-i cine lias to some extent been modified,. and certain refcn n0...', mice been removed. Mr P. R. Climie, South Island representative on the hoard, said last evening that the board attached a great deal of importance to the No 4a scheme, and had modified it recently to suit conditions in Canterbury. Until recently one of the conditions under which No 4a labour was placed on farms was that work of a seasonal, nature could not he undertaken. It was realised that this restriction was preventing a number of farmers frcni assisting the board, and it was eliminated. The only resrietion now operat- , ing are that No 4a labour must not displace men, and must not stand in the way of seasonal labour being engaged through the ordinary channels. “A special effort is now being made to place the whole of the single men in Canterbury on farms before the win* ter,” said Mr Climie. “With this ob* ject in view Dir R. T. Lai ley, officer in charge of he Labour Department, will devote a considerable portion of Ins time to placing men on farms, He has kindly offered to devote his services during his annual leave to this special work, and the board has accepted his offer. He has already circularised, a large number of farmers in Canterbury asking their co-operation, and will be pleased to answer any inquiries and to attend personally to any applications he may receive from fanners.”
