A twelve days' debate on the Premier’s motion to appoint a Select Committee to ('.insider the question of the gold standard concluded with the adoption of the motion by 77 votes to bO, The Premier confined his reply to a bitter attack on General Van Smuts, whom ho accused of deliberately inciting the people to violence and stampeding the farmers. Van ;Snuit s isued a reply to the Premier, in which he characterised the Government as obstinate and criminal, irresponsible and trilling with the Opposition, which washes its hands of the .Select- Committee.
