ANGLICAN CHURCH

FINANCE OF THE DIOCESE. A VERY SERIOUS POSITION. The financial stringency which is being experienced throughout the Dominion at present, has been the subject of much comment, verbally. and in the public press, but generally it ii:»s been confined to its effect upon commerce and industry. Now a rather different sidelight, vet just as severe in effect, has been revealed in the matter of the position in which the finances of tlio Churches are situated.

The financial position of the Anglican Church in the Diocese of Christchurch which, embraces Westland, has given much concern for some time past, and at the last meeting of the Standing Committee, a special sub-committee

was set up to consider the present conditions, and to try to find money to meet the crisis. They are strongly of the opinion that the response will he only poor unless they can tell those to whom they appeal that the Clergy are doing what they can to help one another.

To decide some scheme of actual help, a conference of all Clergy of the Diocese has been summoned in Christchurch for next week, by the Bishop of Christchurch, lit. Rev. Campbell West-Wat-son.

Seme idea of the position may he gleaned from the facts that in 21 parishes, reductions in guarantees have been made, seven being by over 10 per cent, two by 10 per cent, eight by between 5 and 10 per cent, and four by less than 5 per cent, The sum of £2200 has been advanced by the Diocese tq pay stipends, and lias not been repaid by the parishes, while 41 out of 51 cures are in arrears with stipend contributions. in eleven cures, the default has continued for three months. Home Mission Fund grants have had to fie reduced fiv £2o.'), while the Diocese has had to face the I act that the sum of £IOOO is outstanding for instalments in respect of parochial loans.

Sueli then, is the position in which the Diocese finds itself to-day, and it is hoped that- some welcome, practical solution will evolve from the conference next week
