FALSE PRETENCES CHARGE
(By Telegraph—Per Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 19.
A middle-aged man, Philip Fielding Farnworth, was remanded to-day on a charge that February 19, with intent to defraud, lie obtained from Charles Luther Lee, £2O, by falsely representing lie would be paying the amount to two detective-sergeants as a bribe to arrange that a bookmaking business carried on by Farnworth and Lee would be free from prosecution. The Magistrate refused to suptess the name. ■
DISCHARGING OIL IN HARBOUR
AUCKLAND, Feb. 19
Henderson and Macfarlane Ltd., as agents for the Danish ship Astoria and tiie Shell Company of New Zealand, as agents for the Norwegian ship Andrea were to-day lined £25 and £-50 respectively for discharging oil into the harbour. It was stated that the ship’s olfence was due to a misunderstanding of the Danish officer’s order. The Shell Co. had done all that was possible to help the Har-bour-master.
ILLEGAL MANNER OF SALE, WELLINGTON, Fob, 19. Percy L. Brndv was to-day fined £5 for disposing of shoes by means of chance, and £1 for obstructing the traffic in Willis Street. His manager, Allan Perry, was convicted and discharged. Odd shoes were .thrown into the street, so that people could claim mates.
£2OO FINE IMPOSED.
INVERCARGILL, Feb. 19. John Farquhar .Mcßea was fined £2OO, in default 12 months’ imprisonment for conveying spirits on which the full duty was unpaid.
Accused took 17 bottles of whiskey to a hairdresser’s shop, where it was se'red.
The prosecution stqted that accused was the distributing agent for an illicit distillery. The magistrate expressed that he was equally culpable with the distil-
ILLEGAL FILM EXHIBITION.
WELLINGTON, Feb. 19
Francis Richard Holtom, of Paekakariki, and Walter Leak, were fined £5 and costs for exhibiting a film at Flimmorton, when they were not holders of exhibitors* license in respect to. the hall. It was stated that the promises had been found unsuitable, and the defendants were under notice to make a lean-to fireproof, but had shown before the work was done,
A DEGENERATE,
NAPIER, Feb. 19,
Kenneth Impett, convicted of indecent assault on a male was sentenced by Judge McGregor to four years’ imprisonment. His Honour said that he agreed with the police and the probation reports, that the prisoner was a menace. In view of his past record, and notwithstanding the jury’s recommendation to mercy, a term of imprisonment was necessary.-
