Jnited Press Association —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. )
LONDON, February 19. The state of Parties i,n the Irish Free State election at 2.30 o’clock was as follows: Republicans 46 Government 32 Independents 10 Labour
A message from Dublin states that the present indications (at 4 a.m.) are for a close finish.
A change of the Government is not yet certain, although Mr De Valera’s party may be the strongest unit in. the new Dail Eireann.
The Republicans have gained two seats from the- Government, two seats from the Independents and one seat from Labour.
The Government cmu.Udates appear to have dropped votes almost everywhere.
Electors rewarded Labour’s alliance with the Republicans with the defeat of many Labour candidates. AH of the Communist candidates were rejected.
WHERE GOVERNMENT SCORED
LONODN, February ly.
The total votes polled by Government candidates in the North Dublin constituency was thirty-six thousand against Mr De Valera’s party’s total of twenty-five thousand. The highest undivided poll in the whole Free State was President Cosgrave s. President Cosgrave had heretofore complained of the vagaries of the system of Proportional Representation, hut he has reason now to bless that system because it has enabled some of his eandintos to scrape home from near the bottom of the poll.
COSGRAVE REGIME ENDED
COALITION NOT LIKELY
LONDON, February 19
iThe “Guardian's” Dublin correspondent says that one apparent ceitninty at the present stage is that the Cosgrave regime is ended, and everyone is praying fervently, rather than hopefully, that nothing worse will come in its place. It is improbable that de Valera will obtain an absolute majority, but there are indications that he will have from seventy to seventy-five seats over Labour which is anti Cosgrave. There is no likelihood of a Fianna Fail-Labour Coalition, as all responsibility of office would be thrown on de Valera. . The Communist candidates in Dublin. Larkin and Troy forfeited their ' deposits.
