SANDERS CUP

A WIN FOR. CANTERBURY. WELLINGTON BOAT CAPSIZES. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 21. After* an exciting race, sailed in a fairly strong northerly, the Canterbury challenger, Avenger, won the Sanders Cup trophy, to-day. The course was windward and leeward. In the early stages, Betty and Avenger kept each other company, and after the finish of the first lap, it was evident that the race was between these two. The / Otago boat started but withdrew on account of a defective rudder. The Auckland and Southland boats completed the course, hut were well behind the Avenger. The race became very exciting at the last lap, the Avenger and Betty taking the lead alternatively. Rounding the buoy for ithe run for the finishing round, Betty had a lead of about a minute. Johnston did not set his spinnaker immediately, and was forced to do eo later by Bressell setting his, The Avenger crept up on the Betty, but in the excitement* of tlie Avenger’s challenge Johnston looked around, and at the game (time a squall struck the boat and lifted it, It rolled to leewprd, then to the weather, and Johnston being unable to control it as quickly as he had done on former occasions in the race, capsized to the weather.
