An important branch of the work at 90 mile, the testing of the timing apparatus, was onrried out to-day by Cuff, in charge of the work interrupted j 'Sterdav by the rising tide, which ueai ly caught Cuff’s car with the delicate instruments aboard. The car was surrounded by a wave but was pulled out before it sank deep in the sand. * The apparatus is the first of .the kind ever used outside of Europe or the States and is functioned bv the breaking of a beam light at the start and finish, the distances and period between the two being indicated on a ribbon paper written upon by three”electrically operated pens. Thus it is possible to convert the time into miles per hour. A cable is laid along the beach by the Postal Department, joining the time switches. Smith was not present on the beach to-day being confined to his bed with a yiold,* 'but it is not serious, and he wifi ’probably get up ill the afternoon.
