The main block of the Johannesburg University was destroyed by lire early this morning. The library included the Gubbins’ collection of priceless historical documents, and twenty-five thousand books. The main portion of the building was burned out, only the wings being left. The damage to the buildings is estimated at £IOO,OOO. The Johannesburg University (of* ficially styled the University of Witwatwsruud) was founded in 1908 and incorporated in 1922. It has a staff of thirty-seven professors and 158 lecturers and assistants. The student roll number is about 1000. r J lie total value of bursaries'held is over £BOOO. *
