l OCCUPANT’S NARROW ESCAPEAKAROA, December 16. (.Awakened from her sleep by the mewing of a, cat outside her bedroom dpor, an elderly woman, Mrs H. (Rjiddes, had only time to escape in her 7 night attire from a fire that destroyed her. home in Benoit Street, Akaroa, early this .morning. She was tthe sole pccrapant of the house, which was an eighlt-roomed wooden structure. Mrs Rhodes aroused her neighbours, bqt their; efforts, combined with those of the fire brigade, could not save the building. It was burned to the ground and, all its contents were destroyed.
