RAIN IN THE NORTH

BENEFICIAL FALL IN HAWKE’S BAY. HASTINGS, December 16. Rain began to fall gently at an early hour this morning in Hastings and Napier and continued almost without intermission until two o’clock this afternoon in light showers, when the intensity suddenly increased. The fall was steady, it had been earnestly wished for during the last three months. Its effect will not he. without value to sheepfarmers and dairy, farmers. Fruitgrowers and market gardeners will be especially grateful for the fall and will be looking forward to a continuation throughout the night and even longer. It will do much good to crops of fruit and vegetables, all of which were beginning to show a very decided response to the dryness of the weather since October. DRY SPELL ENDED IN TARANAKI. NEW PLYMOUTH, December 16. A rainfall of nearly an inch and a. half last night ended a dry spell which has affected pastures and has reduced production. > —i —j
