PROFICIENCY EXAMS
WERE THEY STIFFENED
SOME AUCKLAND ENQUIRIES.
<By Telegraph—Per Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 11. A statement that thjs year’s school proficiency examinations were more difficult than usual, having been officially denied, investigations were made in a group of Auckland city and suburban schools. It was found that these schools presented 670 children, and that 438 gained proficiency and’ 80 competency. The percentage who gained proficiency was 65.5. Last year the same group presented 644 children of whom 590 gained proficiency and 29 competency. The percentage of proficiency was 91.6. Headmasters expressed the view that there had been a determined stiffening up of the examination and complained that it had been done without due notice, and had reacted most unfairly on pupils. Figures relating to a large private private school arc also interesting, as this school was examined last year and this year. Last year of 69 candidates, 68 gained proficiency and on© competency. This year of 59 pupils, 47 gained proficiency and nine competency, and three failed.
