ASHBURTON CLUB

SALE OF LIQUOR. CASE COMMENCED IN COURT. (By Telegraph.—Per Press Association) ASHBURTON, December 11.

The charge against Edward Loftus. secretary of the Ashburton Working Alen’s Club, of selling liquor, contrary to section 146 (2a) of the Licensing Act was heard by the Air C. R. Orr Walker, S.AI. to-day.-Loftus pleaded not guilty.

The Crown Prosecutor said that the facts were not disputed. The Club had a charter from 1886, and when the district went dry, the Club ceased selling. It kept its charter alive by paying the annual fee. With the change in the electoral boundaries in 1928, the Club again sold liquor to members only.
