SCHOOL COMMITTEE

HOKITIKA HIGH SCHOOL. ECHO OF SWIMMING CONFERENCE. The Hokitika, District High School Committee met last evening when there were present:— Messrs A. C. Armstrong (Chairman), E, J. Pedaer, W. H. Shannon, J. J. Breeze, W. H. R. Sweney, AY. E. Richards, F. Oncsterman and J. Conning (Secretary). It was considered, that the Committee should be represented on the Schools Committee Association, and it was decided that such steps be taken. In conned Won with the issue of •school books in New Zealand from England, Mr Richards considered that some method of supervision with regard to the correct context should be enforced. It was decided that tne majtter be referred ;to the Member for the District, Mr J. O’Brien.

The nurse at the Dental Clinic reported that the total operations were 588, the attendance being 151. Children from the Hokitika and Convent schools constituted the patients reexamined.

Accounts amounting to £1 19s were passed for payment. Mr Armstrong reported on the conference with the Swimming Club, when, with Mr Menaieg he represented the Committee. He detailed the tie* cisfoiisi tha (had been arrived at in connection with the campaign being launched to teach Hokitika school children to swim. “Given fine weather,” said Mr Armstrong, “practically all the. children from a certain standard upward will be ta.ugi’it. 'The Club is fully a'Jlitje to the position now, and with good :n----tructors, welcome results should he achieved:-”

It was deeded to write thanking the Club and expressing appreciation at the effort in train. The -Visiting Committee recommended several minor matters for attention.

The question of holding the school picnic was deferred until the next meeting, a tentative date being fixed for the second week in February.
