BRITISH RUM RUNNER
SUNK BY U.S.A.aCUTTER
WITH VALUABLE LIQUOR CARGO
(United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyrig lit.) ■ BOSTON, November 3. The British Consulate here has reported that Captain James 'Bellman, of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, has asserted that a United States coastguard petrol boat deliberately rammed and sunk his craft, the British registered power boat ‘"Sophie E’’ seven miles outside the twelve-mile limit. Captain Bellman stated that his vessel was lying nineteen miles off Cape 'Ann -and there flashed signals to “Contact Boats,’’ requesting them to come from the shore and to take aboard his liquor cargo. The flashes attracted the coastguard vessel, which allegedly, bore down on the power bout, sinking her immediately. The coastguard cutter rescued the crew of nine men on the “Sophie E ” but there was a valuable cargo of liquor lost. The United States, Coastguard officials have refused to comment on the matter, except to say that Bellman’s boat has been notorious as a rum runner; also that the “'Sophie E wrs without lights and was struck accidentally.
