While fishing near Mercury Island on Thursday of last week, Mr Henry Bjllyeald, of Whitianga, saw an exciting battle between a huge sawfish and two hump-backed whales. Soon after the attack, the whales disappeared and he did not see them again until they showed up two miles away. He was within 200 yards of the contest and saw the sawfish thrashing the water.

The death occurred at Chrictchurch yesterday of Mr Edgar Turner at the ag..- of 56 years, wno was for many years Chief Engineer on the Blackball Company’s trading to Greymouth. He later resigned that position to become engineer to the Christchurch Tramways Board. Owing to illhealth retired two years ago.
Before tlie commencement of the Wataroa sale yesterday, reierence was made to the passing of tlie late Mrs Thos. Mcßride, whose death occurred the previous day and cast a gloom over the district. On behalf of the large assembly present, Mr W. Jeffries, moved that a resolution of condolence be sent to the Mcßride and McPherson families in their sad bereavement and referred to the deceased’s many kindly acts during her lifetime, also the loss to the community. The motion vflas carried in silence. Mr McBride is the Secretary to the Saleyards Coy., and his wife was a daughter of Mrs M. McPherson, a very highly respected settler of the Okuru district.
The New Zealand cricket team will return from its tour of England by the Ruahine, which is due at Auckland on Sunday morning.' Mr D. Reese (president), Mr W. H. Winsor (secretary), and Mr E. R. Caygill, of the New Zealanl Cricket Council, will arrive from Christchurch to welcome home the players. Together with officials of the Auckland Cricket Association, they will go out by launch to the Ruahine when that vessel anchors in the harbour. Members of the team will be accorded a civic reception on Monday. This will be fol’owed by an official luncheon, tendered by the‘New Zealanl Cricket Council. Tlie southern members of the team will leave for their homes on Monday night.

The funeral of the late Mr Charles Rugg of Greymouth, took place yes.erdav afternoon at the Karoro cemetery. There was a large attendance, a ling procession of cars following the funeral from Holv Trinity Church to the graveside, and numerous floral tributes were also leceLed. Onureh services at Holy Trinity Church, and at the graveside, were conducted l>v Archdeacon J. A. dermyn, and the G;-y----moutli Lordge service at the graveside was read by Rro. L. McGlashan.

Heavy yardings of fat stock at the Addington market on Wednesday resulted in a general easing in va.ues, as the supply was greater than the demand. Beef declined by up to £1 a head for all classes, and in the case of fat sheep the drop was from ,'s to Is 6d a head. The better basics of yealersj held to last week’s rates, Tut ill-conditioned calves suffered a decline of from 4s to 5s a Head. Spring lambs shared in the g«»-u»r d casing of values, and the average price per lb was about 7£d and in eases up to 7jd. A smaller yarding of fat pigs saw a fair demand for porkers.
The death took place at the G revmouth Hospital yesterday morning of Mrs Edith Mary Hornby, aged 50 years. The deceased, who was a native of Kanieri, was predceased by her husband 14 years ago. She is survived by two sons, Richard and William of Ruru ,and three daughters, Mrs G. Coimors, and Misses Hornby ‘‘2). all of liuru. There are also three- sn pdaughters, Mrs Mason, Westport, Mis Tetsdale, Wellington, and Mrs Harvev. Nelson.- Messrs William and -lames Millner, of Kanieri. are brothers, and Mrs Kerr, also of Kanieri. ; s a si-tor.
Judging by the large number of enthusiastic- ladies who attended the meeting of the Hokitika Ladies’ Croquet Club yesterday afternoon, the success of the Club is assured. Matters generally were discussed with sabisSacto-vy results If was decided to incorporate the Club at once, the colours -of which are to be cream and cold.
