THOUGHTS OF THE TIMES.
THE BRITISH ELECTIONS. That there were positive as well as negative factors in, the sweeping success of the National Government, however, goes without saying. The electors have shown their determination to maintain the national credit. They have shown their marked distrust of Socialist interference with the banking system. Beyond doubt, also, they have given the Government a mandate to take whatever measures may he necessary for the restoration of British industry > even to the extent of imposing a stiff tariff on imported manufactures. The declaration in favour of the National Government, indeed, is so complete and so enthusiastic that it reads almost like the effect of a wave of religions revivalism. Elections rarely have this emotional element, and when it is manifested is shows that the nation must have been deeply stirred.
