VALEDICTORY

DR. H. D. HAYES AND MRS HAYES. (Contributed). A largely attended function took place in the Social Hall of the Mental Hospital on Friday evening last, when the members of the staff, and their friends, met to say farewell and present an illuminated address to Dr Hayes on the occasion of his promotion to Nelson. The committee had tastefully decorated the hall for. the function. Mr E. Dale occupied the chair in which capacity Jie formally received Dr and Mrs Tlayes. Mr Wormington made the presentation speech, and also read the aduress. Mr Wormington in the presentation speech paid a tribute to Dr Hayes’s wide administration of the local Mental Hospital, expressed the regret of staff on his leaving Hokitika, but conveyed' hearty congratulations on h.s promotion to a higher position, and the most sincere good wishes for a prosperous future. Messrs W. Butler and M Coulson delivered congratulatory speeches. The Matron, Miss Drummond, presented Mrs Hayes with a very choice bouquet. Dr. Hayes in his reply thanked the staff for the high tribute they had paid his, and expressed keen regret on leaving Hokitika. He continued by saying that his staff had always given him the greatest satisfaction, and their willingness in carrying out their duties had made his .position a pleasant one. The Dr. concluded by wishing his Hokitika staff a very prosperous future. A very dainty sit down supper was then served to lo() guests. The “Black Hand” orchestra provided the music for the dancing which was indulged in until a late hour The function went* with a swing from the start, and all who attended the gathering were animated by the spirit, of enjoyment. Vocal items were rendered by Misses R. Morgan, M. Hanrahan, J. Warren and Mr J. Stopforth. Miss A. Daly acted as accompanist The singing of Auld Lang Syne brought a very successful function to a close. The following were present: — Mesdames Dr. Hayes, black satin: G.
