A TIMELY RESCUE
A man’s life was saved at Lyttelton on Thursday night by means at one of the lifebuoys which are provided at intervals along the wharves. The man, an amateur fisherman from Christchurch, burdened with a heavy overcoat and a haversack on his back, was making his way along the edge of the lower breastwork when he stumbled in the heavy shadows thrown by a rake of trucks, and fell into the water twenty feet below. His cries for help attracted Mr James Jeffries, of Lyttelton ,who was passing at the time. Mr Jeffries hailed another man and a buoy was thrown to him from over the rake oh trucks. The buoy thrown by Mr Jeffries landed squarely over the shoulders of the struggling man. who 1,-opt himself afloat until a dinghy came to his rescue. He was attended to in the Lyttelton Rowing Club’s sheds and later recovered sufficiently to leave for home.
