BOARD APPROVES SCHEME

WELLINGTON, September 30
The (first formal meeting of the Unemployment Board, under the Chairmanship of Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, was held to-day at Parliament House, Wellington. Although Mr Coates has conferred with the members of the Board from time to time .since his appointment as Minister in charge of unemployment, major questions of policy were discussed for the first time today. 'Several State Departments are to work together in giving effect to the new scheme to be fostered by Mr Coates. Before the Board meeting, the main outline of the scheme had been prepared, and this was 'placed before the members for consideration, it is understood that proposals have met with the approval of the Board, and that they will now go before Cabinet for final perusal, after which they will be included In the Prime .Ministers’ financial policy statement to be placed before the House next Tuesday.
CHILD SCALDED
DUNEDIN, October 1
Mary Margaret Paulter, four years, died at the hospital as the result of severe burns. Her parents on healing her screams found a pot of boiling water had been pulled off the range and the child was badly scalded. THEFT CHARGE. CHRISTCHURCH, October 1. Pleading guilty to nine charges of theft from public telephone cabinets, £2 9s in all, Arthur Hall, alias Thomas •Simpson, dark, 31, was sentenced by Magistrate Mosley to three months’ hard labour. The police said considerable damage had been done and /the seivice had been dislocated.
