All pipe and cut plug tobacco imported from America, was increased in price by Is 6'd per lb. to-day, by wholesalers. (Retailers in Christchurch have not yet passed on the rise to the public, but this is certain to occur within the next few days.
Smokers will probably be the first people in (New Zealand to feel the effects of Britain going off the gold standard. This is what has caused the increase in price. The importers have to pay more for American tobacco and are passing the approximate increase on.
