CRASHED OVER BRIDGE

CAR CAUGHT BY PILLAR, DRIVER ESCAPES DEATH. WANGANUI, September 8. Mr James Caithness, a stock buyer, residing in Puri Puri Street, Taihape, had a miraculous escape from death on the side of a bridge over the Hautapu River, near the Cathol c Church at Ohotu, some five miles from Taihape, and would have fallen into the river had it not been stopped by a concrete pillar. When 'Mr Caithness was about threeparts across the bridge, the car crashed into the side of the structure, broke three strong railings and stanctions and fell about thirty feet before being caught against one of the concrete pillars of the bridge, which prevented the vehicle from falling a furth- r 170 feetdown a steep cliff into the river below. Had the car missed bring caught against the conrete pilar '(as it very nearly did), it is practically certain that Mr 'Caithness would have lost his life. He was found unconscious in the wrecked ear, ai\d was taken to the Taihape Hospital suffering from concussion, a fractured shoulder, and a wound on the side of the head. Mr Caithness is now reported to be making satisfactory progress.
