JUMP FOR SAFETY
WORKERS ON JIGGER. IN ROAD OF TRAIN; M'AItTON, September 7. A relay gang of men were returning from their work on three jiggers recently, when they met the south-bound goods on a lull between Mangaonoho and Kaikarangi, Two jiggers were fairly well in the lead and sighted the train in • time to vacate the line, but the third, travelling down the grade, did not notice the train approaching until a distance of about 25 yards separated them. With only a few seconds to act, the four men jumped for safety, and in the attempt Air F. Gaff fell on to the side of the line, receiving a compound fracture of the thigh and a severe laceration of the scalp. The other three men escaped unhurt. The accident occurred only a short distance from a tunnel, and had the jigger been caught in th© tunnel a serious fatality must have occurred. The injured man was removed to Tnihape hospital, where he is progressing favourably.
