CRICKET

THE NEW ZEALAND TOUR. AGAINST ENGLISH XI. CHAPMAN'S CENTURY. ENGLAND'S BIG LEAD. (Special to Press Association). (Received this day at 9-25 a.m) LONDON, September 7. New Zealand cricketers continued the match against an England eleven. The weather was fine and wicket easy. Ames and Owen-Smith added 83 by bright bating. Ihe brilliant century by Chapman gave the England eleven a strong first inning’s lead. New Zealand has seven wickets in hand and require 136 to avert an inning’s defeat. Chapman early commenced to hit the bowlers off their length and played sparkling shots all round the wicket. He struck his .best form for the first time this season and dominated the batting for ninety minutes. He hit one six and eighteen fours. ' Allom and Freeman offered an unexpected resistance for the last wicket against an attack somewhat demoralised by Chapman's aggression. Allom batted really well. The 'New Zealand bowlers had an unenviable task oil a lifeless wicket, but the attack was unsteady. Vivian realised the value of keeping the bull well up. * New Zealand butted for one hundred . minutes. Mills and Dempster opened brightly and made fifty-nine before the former was caught from a half hearted shot. Dempster and Blunt were caught at short slip. The attendance was 2,000. The “Observer’s” cricket writer says: No interest to sport is served by buying Bradman from Australia into English cricket. He is an ornament and pride to his own country, but as a salaried run-getter for an English shire, he would he only an irritating reminder of how money can derange the natural order of things.
