SCHEME FOR YOUTHS.

(By Telegraph—Per press Association)

WELLINGTON, Sept. 5.

Details of aui unemployment scheme for the training of youths between sixteen and twenty' years of age in farm work were announced by' Hon. Mr Smith this afternoon.] He said that in the meantime the applications would he limited to one hundred. The period would be for one year. The youths were to be placed on suitable selected stations, where the Unemployment Board would be satisfied that there would be ample opportunity to obtain a general knowledge of farm work. It was to be clearly understood that they' were not going on as ordinary farm labourers, and their presence would not be sufficient reason for shortening the number of hands. In their general training the boys would undertake every kind of farm. work carried on at a station. A suitable station for the purpose was one where two or more hoy's could he trained at the same time. The Local Unemployment Committees were benig invited to look out for suitable stations. Five shillings per week as pocket money would be allowed It was in the nature of an educational bursary. Mir Smith stressed that the limiting of the number to one hundred might be interpreted as too small, even for a .beginning, hut the Board had been guided by two considerations. First it might prove if the scheme were workable; and second, see that reasonable developmental work was in progress to. ensure that, after training, there would be a chance for the boys of finding permanent employment in farm work.
