RAILWAY MANAGER
A COMING APPOINTMENT. WELLINGTON, September 4. The Railway' Hoard will hold,/ 1 meeting on September 9, when it is expected the Government will have made tlie appointment of Mr H. H. Sterling as chairman, and the hoard thus will he permanently constituted. It will then have the duty of recommending to the Government a suitable person to lie appointed general manager, who will he formally appointed by OrdeiMin-j Council. Thus in effect the Railway Board has power to appoint its chief executive officer. Though a number of names are the subject of speculation it is impossible to predict with certainty wild the new manager will he, owing to the way in which the hoard has .been reducing staff by taking advantage of tlie provisions of the Finance Act for earlier retirements on superannuation, and there are a number of high executive officers of the department with long service.
