PRIZES PRESENTED

ASHBURTON COMPETITIONS SOCIETY. ASHBURTON, September 2. The demonstration concert in connection with the Ashburton competitions, which concluded yesterday, was held at His Majesty’s Theatre this evening. There was only a moderate attendance, but the programme provided by the prize-winners was of a high order. During the interval the principal prizes were presented by the Mayor ('Mr IV. iH. Woods) and the Chief of the Scottish Society (Air J. Sinclair). In handing over the Tucker Trophy, the Mayor stated that there appeared to have been some • misapprehension concerning it. He explained that it was a perpetual trophy so far as the society was concerned, and the winnei held it for twelve months only.

It was announced that the pieces for the championship solo next year would be “Op. 24 Brahms,” Variations and' Fugues on a Theme by Handel.
