A HOUSE FIRED
A CHARGE OF ARSON
OWNER . PLEADING GUILTY

AUCKLAND, August 25
A large house at Herne Bay divided into flats, was discovered afire about two o’clock on Monday morning. Firemen arrived promptly and prevented the flames running through the bouse.
/ Meantime about fifteen people,- including children, and women, and the caretaker aged 70, -escaped in their night attire. The police investigated the circumstances all day yesterday and the fire
superintendent said it was a deliberate case of incendiarism.
Four separate fires, entirely unconnected were burning in widely separated pifrts of the house, all in unoccupied flats.. This morning, Charles Vernon, 53, a tailor, the owner of the premises was charged by the police with wilfully setting fire to them. He was remanded for a. week.
His counsel asking for bail, said accused intended pleading guilty and wanted his liberty to put his affairs in order.
The police opposed hail which the Magistrate refused, saying the' accused could he given the facilities lie wanted while in custody.
The premises were insured for £3,500 and furniture for £7OO in Guardian Assurance Company.
