HAMILTON, August 22.
Greater difficulties still to be faced, coupled with the hope that despite these it would be possible to provide every unemployed man with at least work and food were foreshadowed in a statement made by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. S. G. Smith, in reply to a deputation of unemployed at Hamilton to-day.
The Minister added that restrictions placed on single men, on those with money saved, on widowers and; others were not imposed for the purpose of creating friction. They were brought about by the plain fact that, the Government had not the money] The tiirn political events took yesterday, added the Mnister, was an indication to New Zealand people that the financial position had to he faced. Nobody liked wages restriction or an army of unemployed, hut facts had to he faced.
“Without desiring to he pessimistic,” proceeded the Minister, “it is possible that we are going to face worse times during the next few months than ever before.”-
