SPANISH REPUBLIC
REVOLT IN BASQUE PROVINCE, [United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.] MADRID, August 23. Wishing to prevent a rising, allegedly led by Roman Catholics, the Government sent thirty thousand troops, with machine guns and artillery, to the Basque provinces. In addition to twelve newspapers already suspended, Senor Maura, Minister of the Interior, closed three further Catholic papers at Pamplona, where Basque religious feeling is most intense.
The cruiser Libertad proceeded to Bilao, where Civil Guards are protecting the churches against the mob. A Left reaction plot to assassinate Senor Maura, devised by three Socialists, is reported to have been discovered/ The conspirators escaped.
