New Zealand bowlers definitely held the upper hand against Essex. Pope was dismissed shortly after lunch with a low catch bv Matheson at square leg off Vivian. Nichols ana Bray were the only others to offer resistance to the accurate bowling of Vivian and Merritt. The former was exceptionally steady and bowled 29 overs, ior fourteen maidens. The last four wickets fell for ten runs. Eastman was, unable to bat owing to an injured hand. The innings lasted 195 minutes.

Lowry enforced the follow on and Essex Uatted an hour betore stamps. Merritt again bowled well and deserved more than one wicket.

The weather throughout was bitterly cold and there were several adjournments owing to light showers. The attendance was four thousand.
