AN ANTARCTIC MYSTERY

SYDNEY, August 11

Although nautical charts indicate the existence of the mysterious Dougherty Island in tho Great Southern Ocean. Captain Mackenzie, master or the Discovery upon the occasion of the last research expedition, declares he saw no sign of such island. The Discovery,. passed over the charted position of Dougherty Island, which has been described ns one of the most desolate spots in the Great White South, and soundings revealed 2472 fathoms of water. No land was' seen and visibility was good for 12 miles.
