TELEPHONING TO SHIPS

RUGBY, August 10.

An interesting experiment was inaugurated at the Newport Docks in South Wales to-day when the Clan Line steamer connected telephonically with London, Glasgow, and Liverpool. Cables have been laid to the general cargo side of the docks, where nine plugging-in switches have been installed.

The Clan Lino lias used the Newport Docks for 40 years, and it is estimated that it has carried 2,000,000 tons of cargo to Egypt and other parts of Africa, including locomotives and railway carriages.

~ Similar facilities for the connection of ships berthed in dock to the trunk telephone .service will he available soon at Swansea and Cardiff.
