STOPPING THE ROT. Rots due to fungi cause enormous losses to the banana industry. One in particular, “stem-end rot,’’ enters at the cut end of the stalk, creeps up the ritem and eventually' ruins the bunch. Scientists at Cambridge, England, working with grants from the Empire Marketing Board, have taken out a patent for a method of checking these attache by sealing the end of the stems with vaseline. This treatment may save the industry thousands of pounds annually.
