TRANSPORTING RELIEF WORKS
PROBLEM OF COST.
(By Telegraph —Per Press Association )
WELLINGTON, July 23
The difficulties that local fiocnes are encountering in turning the transport costs lor the men oil relief works were piaced before Hon. All* Forbes and lion. Mr Smith by representatives of ipeal bodies of the Manawatu district to-day. It was stated that, unless they were assisted in the matter, they would not not be able to carry on their relief scliemes.
The Prime Minister, in course of his reply, said that it was impossible for the Unemployment Board to"pay the cost of transport, but he would confer immediately with the Alain Highways Board on a suggestion made by Air Nash, ALP., in introducing the deputation, that an arrangement should be made with that Board for a subsidy to the Counties which were doing work which would conserve the finances of that Board. The Prime Afinister said that the Counties might lie able to send the men entitled to three days’ employment into camps and so ease the transport difficulty. The Unemployment. Board could not provide accommodation. It was not advisable said the Minister, also to make the relief works too attractive, as there would he no incentive for men to seek Permanent work. The Alin is ter said that he realised thp transport difficulty, and would confer with Air Smith on th° points r rosed by the deputation. It wo<s hoped that the position would be eased in the spring.
