BIBLE IN SCHOOLS
(By Telegraph—Per Press Association)
WELLINGTON, July 24. Mr Holland AI.P. for Christchurch, who is in charge of the Religious Bill said that he was at a loss to, understand the statement by Bishop Liston and heads of the Roman Catholic denomination. Archbishop O’Shea and Redwood had stated only three weeks ago that the opposition of the Roman Catholic Church had, now been withdrawn as a consequence of an amicable agreement which had been arrived at. Air Holland said that he knew of no further development in the matter. Evidence had not been lacking, he added, that the Catholic community was strongly in favour of religious instruction in schools and the late Bishop Cleary had stated over and over again that irreligious education was to be condemned. Similar evidence had been given before a select committee to the House by the late Rev. Father Gilbert of St, Bede’s College. Air Holland pointed out that the promoters of the Bill were acting with the full acquiesence of Archbishops O’Shea and Redwood as heads of the Roman Catholic denomination. Their legal adviser was thoroughly satisfied about the matter.
