AT TIMARU, (By Telegraph—VerPress Association) TLMAIU7, July 13. The urgent necessity for an even more generous response on the part of the public to prevent distress in the weeks of winter yet remaining, is stressed in a statement on the work of the Central Relief Society during the two months of its working existence presented to the committee at its weekly meeting. The statement showed that in the financial side, liabilities on July 4 amounted to £279 ISs od, and assets £BOB 18s lid, leaving a credit, balance of £628 19s 6d in the relief account. A further £IOOO was required if the functions of the society were to be carried on this winter, and the requirements according to past experience, fulfilled.

A conference of South Canterbury members of Parliament (Messrs Clyde Car, T. D. Burnett and J. Bitchener). Mayors, chairman and representatives of county councils ,town' boards, Harbour Board, members of the executive of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, representatives of relief or ganisations and other interested bodies, will be held at Timaru on Saturday afternoon, July 18,, to discuss and evolve a comprehensive scheme of reproductive work in which South Canterbury unemployed could be engaged.
