REPEAL OF THE ACT. ' URGED ON MINISTERS. . fly Telegraph—Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 29. A deputation from the Unemployed Workers’ Federation met Mr Smith, the Minister of Labour, to-day. The Minister of Justice was also present. The proceedings were at times heated. At one stage, Mr Smith threatened to have one of the speakers ejected. Mr L. Sim said that the deputation demanded the repeal of the Unemployment Aft. Their organisation was urging the urienyiloyed to refuse to pay the third instalment of the levy. Another speaker protested against the ’ evictions for the non-payment of rent, and he urged that the law should be amended to prevent evictions.
i Replying to the deputation. Mi Smith said that be fully realised the difficulties of the present situation, lit would give a written reply to their representations. None of the speakers had advanced a constructive idea. The' Unemployment Board had been spending £50,0(X) when it was receiving only £24,090. It was now spending £45,000 a week. In conclusion Mi Smith said that their representations would be placed be.ore the Cabinet.
