GISBORNE RAILWAY
BOARD’S INSPECTION
NOT FAR ENOUGH. (fly Telegraph—Per Press Association) GISBORNE, June 29. At a special meeting of the Gisborne Railway Committee, held this evening, in connection with the projected visit of inspection oi the proposed line by the Railways Board, disappointment was expressed at the brief nature ot the Board’s visit, it being pointed out that, apparently, no opportunity was to be taken to view the riclr country about and north of Gisborne, from which the line would draw by far the greatest part of its revenue. It was stressed that at no stage bad it been contended thqt the country through which the line was passing would be paying country. The members were emphatic in the view that it was absolutely essential for the visitors to view the country at the Gisborne end of the route, as otherwise the visit might be wholly abortive.
It was decided to forward arguments in favour of the line to the Board immediately, and the following telegram is to he sent: “Local Railway Committee consider that it is essential that the Members of the Board should spend at least one da.V in the district with a view to acquainting themselves with the extent and quality of the country which the railway will serve, and also its possibility for development. The country to be passed through coining and going will give no indication of the fertility and resources of the district. The Committee will he pleased to arrange for an itinerary and for conveyances.”
