REQUEST TO PREMIER. L tsy Telegraph, Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, .June 23. Representatives of the commercial interests who are- operating between New Zealand ami Canada, interviewed Rt. Hon. Mr G. W. Forbes to-day, and stated that th v viewtd with concern the present tariff position between the two countries. th. u pcitation asked that, with the object of allowing the multi.vered contracts to be completed, Canada be placed forthwith upon the 'British Preferential Tariff that was ruling for h r prior - to the 23th of August, 1930, and be upon that tariff for a period sufficient to enable negotiations for a reciprocal tariff to be arranged. Air Forbes replied that Canada had not approached New Zealand in a spirit of reciprocity, and New Zealand had no alternative but to retaliate. He said the 'Government considered that the soundest basis for trading was for New Zealand to buy in the market where her goods were sold. .Ha added; “And we are not going to buy from Canada because Canada is not prepared to take our butter. The Canadian duty on our butter has been raised without any warning, and no attempt has been made bv 'Canada to enter into negotiations for a reciprocal arrangement. The Government are still prepared to meet Canada in order to place the trade oil a friendly bares once more.” .He added that he hoped that Canada would show the same spirit. So far Canada had not met them in any way,
