YOUTHS SENTENCED. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 13. Three of four youths who- broke and robbed many slot telephones and stamp machines were sentenced to-day to rc--101 mative detention. r i lie Probation Officer remarked on the increase in crimes by youths anu said that already this week ten young men had been sent to the Borstal Institution and there was another batch to come up. The position was becoming serious, and be did not know where it would end.
ROOKIE LINED. MASTER-TON. June 15. •John -James Brennan, alius Stone, alius Brownlie. 3(5 years of age who was charged in the Magistrate’s Court this morning with carrying on the busi ness of a bookmaker in Masterton, was fined £4O, in default tli ree months’ imprisonment. Brennan, who stated l that his operations were on a small scale, asked for time to pay the fine but the Magistrate refused to grant the request. Brennan will go to gaol. On a charge of vagrancy, accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within, twelve months. It was stated that Brennan went to certain houses in Masterton collecting bets and also to the freezing works, where bets were also taken. SHOW OPENS. PALMERSTON X.. June 16. I'lie' Maiimwatu-West 'Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Associations twenty-ninth national dairy show opened today ,in favourable weather conditions. The display was most comprehensive the number of entries,'34oo. constituting a record.
OILFIELDS REPORT. GISBORNE. June 16. Taranaki oil report—Waitangi No. 2 well, excellent progress. Waitangi No. 2 well. Since drilling was resumed, the 16 inch casing was cemented at 340 feet. On 21st, May this cementing job was tested and on Ist. June .it was found quite satisfactory Since that date the well lias been drilled to 1505 feet through hard grey shale. In the last few feet some thin beds of limestone are reported. It is, particularly satisfactory to note that the ground is standing up well, there being so far no sign of the caving conditions which gave trouble in both Gisborne No. 2 and Waitangi No. 1 wells.
AN INQUEST. CH.RISTCHUHCH, June 16. At an inquest on the death ofFrederick M'ussim 2S. T who collapsed while boxing, bis uncle, Richard Musson. said the youth had never complained of being unwell and had never required the attention of a doctor. His parents lived in Sydney. The inquest was adjourned. OBITUARY; WANGANUI, June 16. Obituary—T. B. Williams, ex-Mayor of Wanganui and members of many local bodies; aetat 79 years.
