Coles, H. Osmerrs, and Revd. Knowles Smith. Apologies were received from Revd. H. Knights and Mr R. Lynn. After the confirmation of the minutes and outward correspondence, the inward correspondence mainly referring to the late Competitions, was read and
received. j The Treasurer (Mr Conning) pre- ■ seated the balance sheet of the Society to date. The year opened with a ; credit balance of £l5O, which now was reduced to £lO7. Included in tTie ex penditure was £ll carried over from the previous year. 'The deficit on the recent festival was £32. Details u. the receipts and expenditure were supplied. y A lengthy discussion followed t’ presentation of the balance sheet, nevd. Knowles Smith stated theie were complaints about the reduction i: tlie-prize money. The Chairman explained that when it was ascertained the festival would snow a substantial loss, it was decide to reduce the prize money as provided in the rules in classes were the entries were not of the required number to justify first and second prizes at the J schedule' rate. The same practice was adopted last year in the small classes. The saving by the economy was £24, and if that had not been made the loss on the festival would have been £56. The Revd. Knowles Smith spoke as to the future of tlie Society, and thought with the funds available the full expenditure should he met. Mr Richards concurred. , The Chairman said they had to oh- [ serve the rules which were inserted to conserve the funds for anv emergency. Tf the safeguarding rule were disregarded, a bad precedent would he created. . The matter was further discussed, the majority present being in agreement with the Chairman’s view. It was pointed out the position had difficulties, hut the Society was hound by the rules, and funds should he conserved for the future. The judging costs had increased and were likely to he higher in the future, and the financial position should he maintained as strongly as possible. At the close of the discussion the balance sheet was received and adopted in the form presented confirming the action of the executive. There were three dissentients.
The question.of judges for next Competitions was mentioned. It was .explained, Mr Barton Ginger would judge the elocution section. It was decided to write a Christchurch gentleman relative to judging the musical section, and to enquire from Miss .Waugh for a recommendation for a judge for the dancing section. Wnen the fixing of the time for tlr annual meeting was mentioned, Mr Canning stated ho would not be a candidate for the treasurership, and Mr Osmers was not disposed to act as Secretary. The President hoped before the meeting came round in November any heart burnings would have passed away, and they would all be ready to co-operate, if retaining the confidence of the members of the Society.
The President reported he had telegraphed Miss Collogan on behalf of tlie Society expressing sympathy in her serious loss by fire.—Action confirmed. It was stated the Lyttelton Cup won by Miss Collogan at the late Competitions had been rescued from the fire not any the worse for the experience.
It was stated congratulations had been telegraphed also to ' Miss Rita Morgan 011 her success at the Christ church Competitions. It was decided to write a letter of appreciation and congratulation at the young l.*ul.y.’s outstanding success.

The Chairman expressed the hope that niore support would be given by tlie schools of the district in the future. The date had been changed to suit the school work, but fewer entries than before were being received from the scholars.
